In a remarkable achievement, Lahore has been ranked among the safest cities in the world, leaving behind global giants like New York, London, Paris, and Berlin, according to the newly released Crime and Safety Index 2025 by renowned international agency Numbeo.
The report highlights a significant drop in Lahore’s crime index, with the city now standing at 37th position globally for crime reduction and 63rd among the world’s safest cities.
For the first time in its history, Lahore has witnessed a sharp and clear decrease in crime rates. The numbers tell an impressive story:
- Between April 2023 and April 2024, crime cases dropped from 67,585 to 34,091.
- Robbery and murder incidents saw a staggering 64% decrease.
- Street robberies fell by 55%.
- Motorcycle theft went down by 33%, and snatching incidents dropped by 42%.
- Car theft and the theft of other vehicles declined by 33% and 39%, respectively.
This downward trend reflects a major breakthrough in urban safety and policing.
According to DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, smart use of data and technology played a critical role in identifying crime hotspots across the city. Resources and manpower were then specifically increased in these high-risk areas.
A key part of the strategy was targeting habitual offenders, fugitives, and proclaimed offenders, ensuring their swift arrest and imprisonment.
Moreover, internal accountability was taken seriously. Over 400 officers and personnel faced departmental punishments for misconduct, with even four Station House Officers (SHOs) jailed within their own precincts after being found guilty of criminal negligence.
Faisal Kamran emphasized that the results were driven by a strong culture of merit-based appointments and empowering young officers. He also credited political backing without undue pressure for allowing the police department to set clear policies and implement them effectively.
Despite facing numerous law and order challenges, Kamran believes this success story is a shining example of what teamwork and strategic leadership can achieve.
