Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts has called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office, following comments in which Trump suggested that missing out on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize influenced his approach toward Greenland.
Markey shared his call on social media, highlighting a New York Times report showing that Trump had sent a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, stating that not receiving the Peace Prize made him feel less obligated to prioritize peace over U.S. interests regarding Greenland.
In the message, Trump wrote: “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars Plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”
While the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a private committee in Norway, Markey’s call reflects broader concerns about leadership and the exercise of presidential responsibility.
The 25th Amendment process is complex and requires both the Vice President and a majority of Cabinet members to formally notify Congress that a president is unable to carry out their duties.
Congress would then have 21 days to act, requiring a two-thirds majority in both houses to confirm removal. Without such support, presidential authority would return to the incumbent.
This situation highlights the importance of accountable leadership, careful decision-making, and the mechanisms in place to ensure the stability and safety of governance in the United States.
