An additional sessions court on Monday issued notices to police following an application seeking the registration of a case against the director, producer, and other crew members of the Indian movie Dhurandhar, alleging that the film defamed the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The applicant, PPP activist Mohammad Amir, stated that the movie portrayed the PPP as sympathetic to terrorists and labeled Lyari, Karachi, as a “terrorist war zone,” which he described as provocative, misleading, and damaging to the country’s and its people’s reputation.

He also highlighted that images of Benazir Bhutto, along with the party’s flag and rally footage, were used in the film without permission.

The court directed the SP-Complaint Cell and Darakhshan SHO to submit a detailed report.

The applicant cited the director, producer, actors, and other crew members as proposed accused and relevant police officials as respondents, submitting the plea under Sections 22-A & B of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He maintained that the alleged defamatory content could amount to offences including defamation, criminal intimidation, provocation, and promoting enmity between groups.

Despite filing a written complaint with the Darakhshan SHO, the police had not acted, prompting him to seek a judicial directive for the registration of the FIR and a proper investigation.

The case underscores the importance of responsible filmmaking, respecting national reputation, and protecting the rights and dignity of individuals and political organizations.
