For a whole generation that grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, Umrao Jaan remains the epitome of romance, and much of that magic is attributed to the incandescent presence of Rekha.
That timeless romance was beautifully revived with the screening of the restored version of Muzaffar Ali’s classic Urdu film at the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Jeddah.
For many, including this writer, the journey began with reading Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel, on which the film is based.
Rekha’s unforgettable performance in Ali’s cinematic masterpiece added depth and emotion, making Umrao Jaan an enduring symbol of grace, artistry, and love.
The restored version brought every detail to life, from the dazzling costumes and intricate jewellery to the nuanced expressions of the actors, offering audiences an experience that television could never fully capture.
Watching the film on the big screen after decades was nothing short of magical, as viewers were able to appreciate the subtle layers of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan’s thumris and the journey of a shy young girl transforming into the charming Umrao.
At the screening, Rekha, who is known for her reticence in public appearances, expressed her philosophy of love with quiet elegance: “Words don’t matter much, only love. Silent love.” Her presence at the festival, she said, was a leap of faith that brought her joy.
Director Muzaffar Ali reflected on the restoration process, saying that the film had always been safely kept in the hearts of its admirers.
“If the film is not here,” he said, pointing to his heart, “no matter what you do, it cannot be restored. I am fortunate that the lovers of Umrao Jaan kept it alive in their hearts, giving us the energy to bring it back to life.
It was like giving birth to a child.” With meticulous colour grading and restoration, the film truly felt reborn, and Rekha’s presence made the moment even more special.
Ali added that filmmaking is about touching intangible dreams, and for him, this restoration was a journey back into memories and imagination. Rekha, with her expressive eyes, brought the verses and the narrative vividly to life, making the experience unforgettable.
On the occasion, Rekha was also honored with the Red Sea Hounoree Award, celebrating not just her performance but her enduring to cinema and art, inspiring generations to cherish beauty, love, and storytelling.
