Former US President Donald Trump was presented with the newly established FIFA Peace Prize during the 2026 World Cup draw on Friday, adding an unexpected global spotlight to the historic sporting event.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who announced the award, praised Trump’s role in international diplomacy, particularly his efforts toward brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, describing the prize as recognition of actions aimed at saving lives and promoting peace.
Speaking at the Kennedy Center, Trump said he had not expected the honor and emphasized that his primary concern was human life.
“I don’t need prizes. I just want to save lives,” he told reporters. FIFA stated that the Peace Prize is meant to recognize individuals who take extraordinary steps to bring people together through peace and reconciliation.
The award comes at a complex time, as Trump’s administration is also facing international scrutiny over recent military actions and its immigration stance.
Meanwhile, the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize this year was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who dedicated part of her recognition to Trump, acknowledging his support for democratic efforts in her country.
