A major gas pipeline rupture in Peshawar’s Matni area on Thursday caused widespread disruption to gas supply in Peshawar, Swat and Mardan.
The incident affected thousands of households, forcing authorities to shift consumers to alternative supply lines with strict usage limits.
According to the Peshawar commissioner, a 24-inch main transmission pipeline carrying gas from the southern districts to Peshawar burst near Matni, immediately impacting supply across multiple regions. The disruption left several areas relying on backup systems until full repairs are completed.
Sui Northern Gas officials quickly reached the site and launched emergency repair work. In the meantime, limited domestic supply has been restored through an alternative 16-inch pipeline from the Indus River to Nowshera.
However, due to low pressure and restricted flow, household consumers will receive gas only four hours a day—scheduled for the morning, afternoon and evening.
To prioritize domestic users, the commissioner ordered all CNG stations in Peshawar, Mardan and Swat divisions to remain closed until further notice. Authorities said the shutdown is necessary to prevent system overload and ensure maximum availability for households.
CNG stations will reopen only after the damaged pipeline is fully repaired and normal gas pressure is restored.
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) teams are working round the clock to fix the ruptured section, which officials say has suffered extensive damage. The emergency operation aims to prevent prolonged outages in the affected regions.
