Pakistan has taken an important step toward bridging the digital divide with the launch of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced on Saturday.

The new 19,200km network links Pakistan with major digital centres from Singapore to France, offering one of the fastest, lowest-latency internet routes between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

With 13.2 Tbps allocated to Pakistan including an immediate activation of 4 Tbps the upgrade promises faster, more reliable connectivity for millions.

This strengthened capacity will support everything from online education and telemedicine to small businesses, freelancers, e-commerce, and humanitarian services that depend on stable internet access.

The system’s expanded fibre network, improved fault protection and geo-diversified routes mean communities will face fewer large-scale outages and enjoy a more resilient digital infrastructure.

Officials say this development adds a vital layer to Pakistan’s connectivity backbone, ensuring more people can access opportunities, information and essential digital services.

Earlier this year, the landing of the Africa-1 cable in Karachi further expanded the country’s global connectivity, reinforcing efforts to build a more inclusive digital future for all Pakistanis.
