Netizens furious as Lahore pet market is demolished: ‘They just wanted to live’

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) faced widespread condemnation after a pre-dawn raid on Wednesday destroyed an illegally constructed pet market near Lahore’s famous Data Darbar shrine.

Shopkeepers reported that the demolition tragically resulted in the deaths of numerous cats, dogs, and birds, many of whom were buried alive under the rubble.

While an LDA official denied any animals were harmed, sharing clips of staff removing cages, local animal welfare organizations including Todd’s Welfare Society and JFK Animal Rescue and Shelter posted distressing videos showing both dead and injured animals being pulled from the debris.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with netizens denouncing the action as cruel and inhumane, questioning how such a tragedy could occur and what it reflects about societal responsibility toward vulnerable creatures.

Many called on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to hold the responsible officials accountable, criticizing the lack of proactive measures to prevent harm.

Prominent figures, including actor Zhalay Sarhadi and RJ Anoushey Ashraf, also condemned the demolition, labeling it as “senseless cruelty” and demanding immediate action.

The heartbreaking episode has ignited a nationwide call for compassion, accountability, and stronger protection for animals, emphasizing that their lives deserve care, dignity, and respect.
