As the smog situation worsens across the province, the Punjab government has officially banned the opening of all government and private schools before 8:45 am.
The decision, announced through a notification from the Punjab Environment Department, aims to protect students, teachers, and staff from the hazardous air quality gripping Lahore and other major cities.
According to the official notification, Punjab schools smog timings will be strictly implemented from November 3, 2025, to January 31, 2026. The new rule applies not only to schools but also to colleges and special education centres, ensuring that no educational institution opens its doors before 8:45 am during this critical period.
The government has also introduced strict penalties for non-compliance. Any school found violating the directive will face a fine ranging from Rs 100,000 to Rs 500,000 for the first offence. A repeat violation could lead to a much steeper penalty of Rs 600,000 to Rs 1,000,000.
DG Environment Punjab Imran Hamid Sheikh emphasized that the provincial government will continue to enforce tough measures to curb air pollution. “We are committed to protecting public health and ensuring clean air for our citizens,” he stated, underscoring that environmental protection remains a top priority.
Smog has long been a recurring challenge in Punjab, especially during winter months when air quality drops to alarming levels. Despite various efforts — including CM Maryam Nawaz’s initiatives such as deploying smog guns and monitoring air pollution sources — the results have been only partially effective.
