The cricketing world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Australian cricketer Ben Austin, who tragically passed away after being struck by a ball during practice in Melbourne.

The young athlete, described as a “star cricketer, great leader, and an awesome young man” by his club, was wearing a helmet when a ball from a training device hit him in the neck.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ben succumbed to his injuries two days later.

In a deeply emotional statement, his father, Jace Austin, said the family was “utterly devastated” by the loss of their beloved son.

“Ben died doing what he loved playing cricket with his mates,” he said, also extending compassion toward the teammate involved in the tragic accident.

The tragedy echoes the heartbreaking loss of Phillip Hughes in 2014, prompting renewed calls for safety reviews and awareness in the sport.

Ben’s passing serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community, compassion, and care values that unite the sporting world in grief and solidarity.
