Designer Faiza Saqlain has voiced deep concern over what she describes as creative plagiarism by actor Maya Ali’s fashion label, MAYA Prêt-À-Porter.
Faiza Saqlain claimed that the brand’s recent designs appeared to be “inspired” by her earlier collections “in all respects,” sparking a wider conversation about respect, integrity, and originality within Pakistan’s fashion industry.
Sharing side-by-side comparisons of three similar outfits from bridal wear to luxury formals Faiza Saqlain pointed out striking resemblances not only in the dresses but also in the models and even the photoshoot backdrops.
She urged the brand to “create something of their own,” emphasizing that creativity should be celebrated, not copied.
Among the pieces highlighted was a bridal design from Bus Tum, which mirrored the embellishments of Saqlain’s 2021 creation.
Another, a velvet ombré sari from Viola Luxe, closely resembled her earlier teal blue version, while a black peshwas also appeared nearly identical to her previous work.
Fans and industry peers rallied behind Saqlain, sharing stories that praised her dedication and originality, expressing disappointment that such imitation could undermine the authenticity of an artist’s craft.
At its heart, the incident raises an important humanitarian question — about protecting creative identity, valuing artistic labor, and fostering a culture of mutual respect in fashion and beyond.
