In a move that has sparked both fascination and debate, Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced that the world’s first AI government minister, Diella, is “pregnant” with 83 digital children — each designed to serve as a personal AI assistant to members of parliament.

Speaking at the Berlin Global Dialogue (BGD), Rama described this initiative as a step toward greater efficiency and transparency in governance.

“Diella is expecting 83 children — one for every MP,” he said with a touch of humor. “They will take notes, offer advice, and even alert members if their name is mentioned in debates.

Each AI assistant will be equipped with Diella’s knowledge of EU legislation, ensuring lawmakers are always informed and prepared.”

Launched in September 2025, Diella made history as the first artificial intelligence to hold a cabinet-level position, overseeing Albania’s public procurement systems.

The government has hailed her role as a breakthrough in fighting corruption and reducing human bias in decision-making — a vision rooted in the hope of making institutions more transparent and accountable.

Yet, the announcement has not been without criticism. Opposition parties and rights advocates have questioned the ethical and human dimensions of relying on AI in governance.

Many warn that while technology can support democracy, it should never replace the empathy, accountability, and moral judgment that only humans can provide.

Still, Rama insists that the initiative symbolizes a bold new chapter in how governments interact with data, citizens, and policy. “Artificial Intelligence is no longer science fiction,” he said. “It’s part of Albania’s present — and future.”

As the world watches this unprecedented experiment unfold, the story of Diella and her digital children raises profound questions: Can technology truly serve humanity without diminishing its heart?

Can artificial intelligence strengthen democratic systems — or will it challenge what it means to lead with conscience?

Whatever the answers, one thing is clear: Albania has opened a global conversation about the balance between innovation and humanity in the age of AI.
