Pakistan’s white-ball cricket setup is heading toward another major shake-up, with reports suggesting that Mohammad Rizwan’s ODI captaincy is on the verge of ending.
As per reports, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) indicate that pace star Shaheen Shah Afridi is the frontrunner to take over the Pakistan ODI captaincy, marking a fresh chapter in the team’s leadership structure.
Rizwan’s ODI captaincy in jeopardy
According to insiders, PCB officials and selectors are in the final stages of reviewing leadership performances across formats. The evaluation could result in Mohammad Rizwan’s ODI captaincy being handed over to a new face—most likely Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has previously led Pakistan in limited-overs formats.
Rizwan, who was appointed ODI captain earlier this year, may be stepping aside as part of the PCB’s new strategic direction aimed at injecting energy and consistency into the team’s performances.
Shaheen Afridi has emerged as the top candidate for the Pakistan ODI captaincy, thanks to his proven leadership skills in T20 cricket. The young fast bowler, admired for his aggressive mindset and tactical awareness, has already shown an ability to inspire teammates and lead from the front.

Babar Azam and Naseem Shah return
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball series against South Africa is expected to see the return of two key stars — Babar Azam and Naseem Shah. Babar, who was rested in recent matches, will reclaim his place at the top of the order, bringing much-needed stability and class to the batting lineup.
Fast bowler Naseem Shah, now fully fit after a lengthy injury layoff, is also set to bolster Pakistan’s pace attack alongside Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali. His comeback is viewed as a significant boost to Pakistan’s bowling depth ahead of a busy international calendar.
