WHO reports over 3 billion people worldwide struggling with mental health disorders

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded a powerful call to action, warning of an escalating global mental health emergency that now affects more than 3 billion people across the world.

The organization revealed that millions lose their lives each year due to inadequate treatment, lack of awareness, and limited access to mental and neurological care.

According to WHO’s latest report, neurological and mental health disorders have become one of humanity’s greatest health challenges, yet only a fraction of the world’s nations are adequately addressing them.

Currently, just 63 countries have a national policy for neurological health, and only 34 allocate dedicated funding to combat these conditions — a gap that underscores deep global inequality in healthcare.

The report highlights that millions, especially in low-income and rural communities, continue to suffer in silence.

Barriers such as poverty, stigma, and the shortage of trained professionals prevent many from receiving care that could save lives and restore hope.

WHO Assistant Director-General Jeremy Farrar described the situation as “a defining humanitarian crisis of our time,” stressing that more than one-third of the world’s population faces mental health challenges — yet the global response remains far too limited.

He emphasized the urgent need for governments and international bodies to invest in research, strengthen healthcare systems, and ensure equitable access to treatment.

WHO Assistant Director-General Jeremy Farrar said, is not just a medical issue — it is a matter of human dignity, compassion, and justice.

The WHO’s message is clear: the world must unite to close the care gap, prioritize mental wellbeing, and uphold every individual’s right to live a life of health, hope, and humanity.
