'Don't politicise it': Sana Mir responds to Indian critics of Azad Kashmir remark

Former Pakistan captain Sana Mir has spoken out following criticism from Indian circles over her reference to “Azad Kashmir” during commentary in Pakistan’s ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 match against Bangladesh in Colombo.

The incident occurred at the R Premadasa Stadium when Sana Mir, while speaking about Pakistan all-rounder Natalia Pervaiz, mentioned “Kashmir” before clarifying it as “Azad Kashmir.” Soon after, she was accused of making a political statement.

Responding on X, Sana Mir expressed disappointment that her remarks were taken out of context, saying sports personalities should not be subjected to such unnecessary pressure.

She emphasized that her comment was simply part of storytelling — meant to highlight the struggles and resilience of a player from a challenging background.

“It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion. My words were only to reflect on a player’s journey. There is no malice in my heart or intention to hurt anyone,” she wrote.

To underline her point, Sana Mir shared a screenshot of Natalia Pervaiz’s ESPNcricinfo profile, which listed her birthplace as “Bandala, Azad Jammu and Kashmir.” She noted that her reference came from this official source, which has since been updated.

Sana Mir reminded that commentators are tasked with inspiring audiences by showcasing players’ journeys of grit and perseverance, not by making political statements.

The clarification comes amid already strained cricket ties between Pakistan and India, where politics continues to overshadow sport.

Sana Mir’s words serve as a reminder that cricket should remain a platform for unity, inspiration, and respect for athletes’ stories, rather than a battleground for political disputes.

Bangladesh went on to win the match by seven wickets, while Pakistan continues its struggle in the group stage.
