Pakistan Cannot Afford More Losses from Recurring Floods: COAS Asim Munir

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has said that the country cannot afford the recurring loss of precious lives and properties due to devastating floods.

His remarks came during a visit to flood-affected areas of Kasur and Multan, where he reviewed ongoing rescue and relief operations, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Field Marshal Munir visited the Kasur Sector and the Flood Relief Camp in Jalalpur Pirwala, Multan, to personally assess the situation. He was briefed on the scale of devastation, ongoing rescue activities, and measures being taken to support displaced families. Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman and other senior civil officials also accompanied him.

During the briefing, COAS emphasized that good governance and people-focused development were essential to minimizing future risks. He urged authorities to expedite infrastructural projects that could protect vulnerable communities from recurring disasters.

The army chief underlined the importance of working hand-in-hand with civil administration for effective relief operations. “The challenges posed by frequent floods demand coordinated efforts and long-term planning,” ISPR quoted him as saying. He reaffirmed that the Pakistan Army would continue to stand by the nation and support all public welfare initiatives.

While meeting with flood survivors who had been safely evacuated, Munir assured them of continued assistance in their rehabilitation and resettlement. The affectees expressed heartfelt gratitude for the army’s timely response, calling it a lifeline in their hour of need.

The COAS also conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas along the Lahore-Kasur and Multan-Jalalpur Pirwala axes to gauge the extent of damage. Later, he met with army troops, Rescue 1122 staff, and police officers engaged in relief operations. Praising their morale and dedication, he lauded their round-the-clock efforts carried out in close partnership with civil authorities.
