Field Marshal Asim Munir to remain COAS until Nov 2027 says Rana Sanaullah

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will continue serving as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) until November 2027, in accordance with existing legislation, PML-N leader and Prime Minister’s adviser Rana Sanaullah announced.

He underlined that since this period is already covered by the 2024 amendment that extends service from three to five years, no additional notification is needed.

Sanaullah explained.

“He will retire the day his five-year term ends.”

This extension comes after the terms of military chiefs were formally extended from three to five years by a parliamentary amendment that was approved on November 4, 2024.

Despite fierce opposition, including from Imran Khan's PTI, the bill was rushed through parliament, a move that was criticized for being hurried and lacking in debate.

In May 2025, Asim Munir became the second person in Pakistani history to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, a rare five-star ceremonial rank; the first was General Ayub Khan in the 1960s.

The promotion highlights his crucial role in leading armed forces during a crucial time and was given in recognition of his leadership during the India-Pakistan conflict known as "Marka-e-Haq" or Operation "Bunyan-um-Marsoos."
