Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc retires from T20 Internationals, choosing to dedicate his time and energy to the longer formats of the game.

The left-arm quick, who has been a key figure in Australia’s white-ball success, announced that his priority now lies with Test and ODI cricket as he eyes future milestones.

Starc played 65 T20 Internationals, taking 79 wickets — the second-highest tally for Australia behind spinner Adam Zampa. His fiery pace and ability to strike early made him one of the most feared bowlers in world cricket. Reflecting on his journey, Starc said Test cricket has always been his top priority, but he cherished every T20 appearance, especially the 2021 World Cup triumph.

“I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup. Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup, I feel this is the best way to stay fresh and perform at my peak,” Starc explained.

National selectors and Cricket Australia praised the veteran pacer’s contribution. Chair of selectors George Bailey highlighted Starc’s knack for breaking games open with his wicket-taking ability, while CEO Todd Greenberg commended his team-first decision to step aside and allow the next generation of fast bowlers to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

With Mitchell Starc retires from T20 Internationals making headlines, Australia has announced its squad for the New Zealand series. The team includes left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis, standout all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, and returning players Mitchell Owen and Matthew Short. Notably, Nathan Ellis will miss the tour due to family commitments, while Pat Cummins continues his rehabilitation from a back issue and will not feature.
