AB de Villiers Reveals the Bowler He Feared Most — It Wasn't Shoaib Akhtar

AB de Villiers, one of cricket’s most fearless and explosive batters, has made a surprising confession about the one bowler who had him completely rattled during the early days of his career — and it’s not the fiery Shoaib Akhtar.

In a recent chat on Subhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, the South African legend didn’t hesitate when asked which bowler made him feel uneasy at the crease. “I think the Pakistani magician Muhammad Asif, when I was younger,” said de Villiers. “To be fair to myself, I wasn't really comfortable with my own technique at that time. I had some flaws. I was taking the bat behind my back.”

The South African cricket legend explained how Asif’s bowling felt almost “unfair” to face at a time when his technique wasn’t yet polished. “He just had too much skill. He was playing with me. It felt like a really, really good bowler,” he added.

Known for his pin-point accuracy and sharp seam movement, Muhammad Asif wasn’t the fastest, but his ability to read and outsmart batters made him one of the most dangerous bowlers of his era. While de Villiers faced many top-class pacers throughout his career, including the terrifying Shoaib Akhtar, it was Asif’s control and intelligence that truly tested him.

“I would love to face him now or when I was a bit older, very sound technically, knowing what I'm doing out there,” said de Villiers, reflecting on how much he’s evolved as a player. He also admitted that his high bat lift at the time contributed to his struggles against the Pakistani bowler.

The South African cricket legend debuted in 2004 and went on to become one of the greatest batters in the modern game. In a stellar international career spanning over 14 years, de Villiers amassed 8,765 runs in Tests and 9,577 runs in ODIs, maintaining averages of 50.66 and 53.50 respectively — a rare feat in world cricket.

Beyond international cricket, de Villiers also built a massive global fan base through his performances in T20 leagues, especially with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, where he became known for his breathtaking shot-making and finishing ability.

This honest admission from the cricketing icon highlights just how special Muhammad Asif was — a bowler whose talent often left even the best in the world second-guessing themselves.
