Trump Threatens Major Tariff Hike on India Over Russian Oil Dealings

In a fresh round of remarks that could escalate trade tensions, US President Donald Trump has threatened to “very substantially” raise tariffs on Indian imports within the next 24 hours.

Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Trump reiterated his criticism of India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia, accusing New Delhi of supporting Moscow’s military ambitions.

Trump doubled down on his stance from Monday, where he first hinted at a significant tariff revision targeting Indian goods. Although he didn’t specify the new rate, Trump’s message was clear: India’s trade practices—particularly its high import tariffs and Russian oil purchases—are becoming increasingly unacceptable to Washington.

“They’re fuelling the war machine, and if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” Trump said, taking a swipe at India’s continued economic engagement with Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The president also pointed to the long-standing trade imbalance, arguing that India’s high import tariffs remain a major hurdle in bilateral relations. “The main sticking point with India is that their tariffs are too high,” he emphasised.

While current US tariffs on Indian imports stand at around 25%, Trump signalled that a “very substantial” increase could come swiftly—though he didn’t offer a concrete figure.

This isn’t the first time Trump has targeted India over trade. During his presidency, he ended India’s preferential trade status under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), citing unfair duties and market access issues. His renewed rhetoric could signal a revival of that hardline approach, especially as he ramps up his campaign messaging ahead of the next US election.

Trump’s comments are likely to send shockwaves through India–US trade relations, which have seen highs and lows over the past decade. A tariff hike could impact sectors like pharmaceuticals, textiles, and machinery—key exports from India to the US.
