Australia faces major setback ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Who will lead the Kangroos in the mega event?

05 February 2025

Australia's preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have encountered a significant setback due to the serious doubt surrounding Captain Pat Cummins' participation in the mega event, which has left fans and cricket experts alike concerned about the team's prospects.

Cummins, who has been a cornerstone of Australia’s recent successes, including their triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign, is yet to resume bowling after sustaining an injury. Australian coach Andrew McDonald confirmed this, replying that “Pat has not even been bowling yet, and his rehabilitation has been longer than anticipated. He's unlikely to be ready for the Champions Trophy in time."

On the other hand, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood also is out of the tournament because of an injury. The absence of Hazlewood exacerbates a substantial gap in the Australian pace attack.

As Cummins is set to miss out, the spotlight now falls on who will take over as the captain in his absence. It is widely rumoured that either Steve Smith or Travis Head could captain. Both players have led Australia before and are highly experienced. Smith’s tactical acumen and Head’s aggressive leadership style make them strong contenders for the role.

Also, the Champions Trophy to be played in Pakistan and in the UAE, from the 19th of February to the 9th of March 2025, is one of the top cricket events in the world. With two previous titles, Australia will no doubt be looking to reclaim the title, but these failures may further complicate their bid.

Fans are understandably worried, but the Australian camp remains optimistic.
